September 18, 2017

Fall is finally in the air.  It is a bit chilly at morning recess so a light jacket or sweater will probably help your child be more comfortable.
I sent home the new spelling words for this week.  We are using the sounds of the letter 'n'.  The sound of 'ng' is also /n/.  Everyone did a great job last week on the spelling test.  Whatever you did to practice at home do it again.  It worked!  The words were sent home and you can find them at the side of this blog.
In Social Studies we are learning about China and some of the contributions that the Chinese have made that we still use today.
A little story that we read in class was sent home to read aloud to you.  (The Chips)
In math we are working on 3 digit numbers with 0 in the ones place.  (270, 360, 820, etc.)
I sent home the Parent Teacher Conference papers today.  Please look at your scheduled time as see if that will work for you.  If your time doesn't work for you please give me some idea of what would work.
We are learning computer keyboarding.  They know the home row, a s d f j k l ;, pretty well.  We are now learning d e c with capitols and using the space bar and the tab key.  If you have a keyboard that they could use to practice on at home that would be great.  Out next letters will be k i ,.
Thanks for reading with your child every night.  We are making progress.

We survived our first spelling test.  Most everyone did fine.  A few students really need your help at home to practice spelling words.  The words are sent on Monday. A full sheet of paper with the words Spelling Words highlighted.  The actual test will be corrected and sent home so you can see how your child did.  This is a new process for some of them.  We do have new words this week.  The list was handed out this morning and you can find the words on the side of this blog letter.  Most of the words this week use the suffix - ing.
We are learning some Folk-Tales from Asia this week in our Social Studies.
We will be taking our Chapter one Math Test tomorrow (Tuesday).  The next chapter is continuing on with numbers up to 1,000.  We are trying to learn how to write them in different ways.  Standard (normal), Expanded, pictures, and words.  We will be beginning our Thousands Club books this week.  Everyone will be given a book to write to 1,000 by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's, 25's, and 100's.  It is quite a challenge.
PLEASE REMBER we have a walking field trip to SUU Wednesday morning.  We will be visiting the museum  of natural history and the art museum.  We will be back in time for our regular lunch.
School pictures are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 14.  A large paper was sent home today with all the information.  These are the pictures used for the year book.
Thank you for filling out reading charts and all you do at home to help your child succeed in second grade.

What wonderful weather for our field trips.  We will be going to Cedar Breaks and Parowan Gap on Thursday, Sept. 7.  Please have your child dress for the mountain with shoes they can hike in.  Everyone is required to purchase a school lunch.  The coast is $2.50.  If your child already buys school lunch nothing is different.  If you child usually brings a lunch from home they will need to bring $2.50 for lunch that day.
This week we have begun our spelling.  The words were sent home today.  Every letter sound can be heard in these words.  We have been working on sounds.  Please help your child to practice by hearing the sounds in each word.
We have also started our reading books.  We are reading the Cat Bandit.  Today we read two stories because of no school yesterday.  Your child has some papers to help them retell you the stories.
We will be finishing up our chapter on place value in math this week.
I have the materials set up for reading parents to come into our class.  If you have some time Monday through Thursday please let me know.  The times I need are from 8:50 (school starts) until 10:15.  Thanks for helping at home.  Everyone is reading and doing very well.
